First let us look into what it means to be mindful? According to Psychology Today, it is a state of active, open attention to the present. The state in which observing ones thoughts and feelings without judgment. By practicing being mindful, being in the present moment daily, may help you create new good habits for yourself and you may also find opportunities to help you gain insight on your overall wellbeing. Another mindfulness technique if your having anxiety is the 5-4-3-2-1 grounding technique. Let us get started, the first step is to look around you and find five things you can see right now. Next, identify four things you can feel, it could be a slight breeze, the sun rays on your skin or the texture of your clothes. Next identify three things you can hear, such as a car horn, the sound of background music or the air running through the a/c vent. Next, identify two things you can smell, it may be better to close your eyes for this one. Last, identify one thing you can taste, it could be your lip balm, gum you may be chewing or remembering the taste of something you enjoyed eating earlier. This exercise helps distract you and diverts your attention away from anxious thoughts, via the senses. I encourage you to give it a try and let me know how it works.
